Kipchabo Tea Factory

Processing excellence, community impact, and sustainable tea production

Processing Facility

A Key Pillar in Tea Value Addition

In line with the Corporation's mandate to establish, manage and maintain tea processing factories and process tea, Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation constructed Kipchabo Tea Factory in 2010 to process the Corporation's tea, supporting value addition, employment creation and sustainable forest conservation.

Kipchabo Tea Factory

Factory Overview

Kipchabo Tea Factory is located in Nandi County, approximately 15 km northwest of Kapsabet Town and about 320 km west of Nairobi City. The factory is accessible through the Kapsabet–Chavakali Road.

It is the first factory owned and managed by the Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation and processes green leaf tea produced from the Corporation's tea blocks in four zones namely Nandi South, Nandi North, Nandi Central and Kakamega.

Kipchabo Tea Factory has helped minimize the annual loss of green leaf that could not previously be processed during peak flush periods due to limited processing capacity within the catchment area.

Processing Capacity & Operations

Kipchabo Tea Factory receives clean, unpolluted water tapped from the larger Kakamega Rainforest watershed. The factory is equipped with three processing lines with an annual capacity of 21 million kilograms of green leaf, equivalent to approximately 5 million kilograms of made tea per year.

Out-grower Scheme & Community Impact

  • To optimize this capacity, Kipchabo Tea Factory also processes tea from 3,000 local farmers under its out-grower scheme, helping farmers earn income from their produce.
  • The factory has created numerous direct and indirect employment opportunities, positively improving livelihoods while contributing to infrastructure development within the region.
  • Profits generated from the factory are reinvested in forest conservation, environmental improvement and uplifting the livelihoods of communities living within the catchment area.

Sustainability & Strategic Expansion

The factory supports the Corporation's commitment to sustainable environmental conservation by reinvesting proceeds into forest protection and the improvement of surrounding ecosystems and communities.

Currently, Kipchabo Tea Factory is undergoing expansion to accommodate Orthodox tea processing in line with industry trends and to enhance revenue generation.
