Nyayo buffer zones are established within approximately 100 metres of forest boundaries, combining conservation with compatible economic activities such as tea cultivation, forestry and agroforestry, one of Kenya's most successful models of conservation-based enterprise.
Since inception, the Corporation has established 5,235 hectares of indigenous tree plantations in ecologically sensitive areas, reducing illegal extraction and reversing encroachment on gazetted forests.

The Corporation operates two modern tea factories that process green leaf from the buffer zones, improve tea quality, reduce post-harvest losses and create employment opportunities while promoting sustainable forest conservation.
Constructed in 2010, Kipchabo Tea Factory processes green leaf from Nandi South, Nandi North, Nandi Central and Kakamega using three processing lines with an annual capacity of 21 million kilograms.

Completed in 2022, Gatitu Tea Factory serves Kirinyaga, Embu, Mathira and Nyeri buffer zones and is designed as a two-line processing facility for CTC and Orthodox teas.
